8) Harry Belafonte, Island In The Sun
The Complete
Recordings 1949 - 1957 (Yr 2002)
Bear Family Records BCD 16262 EL
(5 CD Boxed Set, 12" x 12" Format)
Here is the definitive Belafonte collection covering the first
decade of his extraordinary recording career. Happily, it takes in all of the long-out-of-print jazz,
pop and folk sides laid down for Roost, Capitol and Jubilee Records (circa
1950). Then there's his entire RCA Victor catalogue for the period from 1952
through 1957. The repertoire encompasses a wide range of music styles and tunes from
all corners of the globe. Included are 13 previously-unreleased recordings, 10
of which are alternate takes of Belafonte standards, while the remaining 3
are songs being issued for the first time as part of this set. A companion
hardcover book (a collectors piece in its own right) provides historical perspectives, as well as a detailed
discography and many rare pictures from his early years as an actor,
singer and performer. There is some mystery, and a little controversy,
associated with a number of the 112 remastered tracks. For more on this you should
consult the Guest Book exchanges. It is worthy of note that the alternate takes
in this set are every bit as moving as those that were originally chosen for the
albums (4) which, in themselves, are now regarded as classics.
Man Piaba (CD 2, Track 18) ¯
Remix?
The length and content are the same as the track on the "Mark
Twain" LP but, mysteriously, the order of the verses has changed.

From the "Belafonte" LP recording sessions.
Baby Darlin' (CD 2, Track 22) ¯ "New Song" (not previously issued)
Melda Massi (Lemme Go, Melda Marcy)
(CD 3, Track 18) ¯
"New Song" (not previously issued)
From the "Calypso" LP recording sessions.
The Blues Is Man, Part 2 (CD 3, Track 22) ¯ Alternate Take
Merci Bon Dieu (CD 3, Track 24) ¯

25) ¯

From the "Evening" LP recording sessions.
Hava Nageela (CD 4, Track 2) ¯
Alternate Take
From the "Evening" LP recording sessions.
Mama Look At Boo Boo (CD 5, Track
1) ¯
Alternate Take
From the "Caribbean" LP recording sessions.
Cocoanut Woman (CD 5, Track 2) ¯
Alternate Take
From the "Caribbean" LP recording sessions.
Fifteen (CD 5, Track 16) ¯ Original Recording (not previously issued)
How Green Was My Valley (CD 5, Track 17) ¯ Standard Revisited
The Lord Is My Shepherd (CD 5, Track 18) ¯ "New Song" (not previously issued)
I'm Goin' Away (CD 5, Track 19) ¯ Original Recording (not previously issued)
Special Note:
The importance of the Bear issue warrants a departure from the
established protocols for this page. The following tabulation is introduced to
serve as a checklist for fans wanting to relate the individual tracks to singles
and LPs already in their possession. Serious Belafonte aficionados will want to
refer to the companion book for session dates and matrix numbers.

(Feb 2002)
On The Path Of Glory (Track 6, CD 2)¯Previously Unreleased
This is a duet with Harry Belafonte from the Petula Clark TV Special from 1968
on NBC. Controversy flared over a tender gesture towards the end of the number
when Petula took
Harry by the arm . This sequence was eventually included without any editing.
The 2CD set has 45 tracks but Belafonte shows up on only this one song.

Me'ci Bon Dié¯Disco Mix
The original studio master from 1956 overdubbed as disco music.
This is a CD single with 2 different arrangements and 4 distinct versions (2
long, 2 short).
As this is not an original recording, but rather a remix, it does not figure in
the "Track Count."

(4) out of 19 tracks on this CD album of live recordings are different versions
of songs which appear on the double LP set from 1960. The circumstances under
which these alternate recordings were made remain a mystery. Please consult
Volume 6 of Fan Forum to read more about this intriguing puzzle. You will
find entries on this subject dated Jan 11, 2006, Dec 16, 2006, Jan 7, 2007, and

further comment will be offered here. Thanks to Menno for bringing these
mysterious recordings to our attention and also to our collaborators for taking
